Mission Statement: To recruit and train volunteers to effectively tutor students who are eager to improve their lives by increasing their ability to read, write, or speak English.
It is estimated that close to 16,000 adults in New Britain, 6,800 in Bristol, and 4,500 in Southington, are at the lowest literacy level. Employers report a lack of skills in reading, writing, or speaking English as an obstacle to hiring or to a worker's success in a job. Students are women and men of many ages and nationalities. Some are high school graduates, some are drop outs, and most are immigrants, new to the United States. We give them the tools to achieve their personal goals and to become better parents, employees, and citizens.
We train volunteer tutors to help people learn to speak English and read items such as notices from their children's school, newspaper ads, and medicine labels. They ofter help a student progress toward citizenship or a work, education, or family related goal. Volunterrs are provided with an in depth 20-hour training. Volunteers meet with students for 2 hours each week. We provide ongoing support to all tutors and assessments of students' learning.
